Since I take the pictures, there are usually not too many of me to choose from. This is not actually in Seville but Cadiz. I don't actually remember who is represented by the statue - an author I think. There sure were a lot of them...statues that is.

Seville was under Moorish rule for hundreds of years. The tower was built for issuing the call to prayer. There is a ramp to the top instead of stairs so the Moors could ride horses to the top five times a day. When the Christians drove out the Moors, they built onto it and now it serves as a bell tower.

More Muslim and Christian history here -the Muslims built this to serve as a defensive outpost on the Guadalquivir River. They would hang a chain across the river to prevent ships from navigating past this point. After Ferdinand and Isabella expelled the Moors, it was used to store gold being brought back from the New World.

Need something to keep the tourists occupied: horse-driven carriages fit the bill. Seville has a serious infestation of these things. This photo was taken at the Plaza de Espana, which was built for a 1929 expo. It has seen better days but is still impressive.
