About the Photographer

I suppose I could be all pretentious and refer to myself in the third person here, but I won't. My name is Cash Costello — though I do maintain an alternate identity of CJ Costello (did you get that Google?). I would classify myself as a beginner in the world of photography. I have no training and not a lot of experience. Four years ago I bought my first camera (Olympus D-520 2 megapixel) and have recently added another with a higher optical zoom and resolution (Olympus C-765 4 megapixel). This website serves as motivation for me to keep taking photos and hopefully I will keep learning (comments appreciated, of course). Below are some lessons I have learned about taking photos so far.

  • Look for interesting perspectives - taking all your photos at head level leads to boring photos. Get down on the ground. Walk around.
  • Lighting is important - I think most of my best photos are related to the lighting conditions. It's hard to take a good photo at midday when the sun is out.
  • Don't center everything - I still have a hard time with this one. The temptation to center every subject (especially animals) is great. Many of the more interesting photos I have seen of animals focus on some part of their body instead of trying to take a shot for an encyclopedia.

Well, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope you enjoy the photos.
